Cheap Kitchens And The Toll Of Everyday Living

By Andrew Johnson

Cheap kitchens that pass the test of daily living can be a great way to update your home. We put our kitchens through a host of challenges on a daily basis and yet we often don't even realize the implications. Starting with the kitchen cabinets, you can upgrade your kitchen for a pittance and still pull off a really great new look.

We tend to abuse our kitchen cabinets just by living life. Grease and grime from cooking can end up on the cabinets. Children with crayons and pups with muddy underbellies can take their toll on the cleanliness and the overall look of your kitchen cabinets. When your cabinets can be easily repainted in order to spruce up the look of your entire kitchen, you have one of the most cost effective methods of redecorating while extending the life of your cabinetry.

Cabinets that are painted can look very nice, fresh, and new. With a clean paint and a good selection of color options you can create a fresh look that is completely anew when it comes to the appearance of your entire kitchen. Of course, you can easily repaint in order to change the look of your kitchen regularly. When it comes to remaking a kitchen you can just as easily recreate the floor as well.

Be careful with your selection of flooring materials and you will be able to deliver on your need to create special looks for less. If you stray from carpeted floors and natural hardwood flooring (floating wood floors not included) you can upgrade and update as needed with very little effort or money.

To help save money and keep cheap kitchen alive and well for a long time, the quality of the initial work should come into consideration. Cabinets, counters, and floors that sag can be hazardous to the look of your kitchen. If you're handy, you can usually replace these things by yourself but without the ability to build and restore, you're going to need to hire a professional.

The basic appliances of a kitchen can be the most expensive part of redoing a kitchen. When you can replace appliances with updated equipment you save money in energy costs. You can save a great deal of money when you use energy efficient appliances, reducing the overall costs of a kitchen by a wide margin.

Cheap kitchens can be designed, redesigned, upgraded, and maintained with less energy and money than completely redoing a kitchen. It's more cost effective to plan ahead and maintain high quality look than it is to pour money into a kitchen that will need a complete makeover in another five years.

Meat Lasagna To Make A Great Family Dinner

By Mike Jones

Are you looking for great ideas for this week's dinners? Try a meat lasagna one night. This delicious dish of Italy is a great meal when combined with a lovely salad and some tasty bread.

What's in one of these meat lasagnas? A wonderful combination of pasta, a sauce with Italian spices, ground beef, ricotta or cottage cheese and mozzarella cheese. All of the ingredients are layered in a pan and baked until the pasta is done and the cheese is melted.

Unlike other pasta dishes, lasagna can be made using uncooked pasta. The wide lasagna noodles can simply be layered in the pan with all the wet ingredients. Baking may take a little longer, but you will never know that they were not cooked beforehand.

An alternative meat lasagna uses chicken, Alfredo sauce and also has vegetables in the layers of the pan.

If you are a vegetarian, the lasagna could be made with veggies instead of meat. You could substitute spinach, zucchini and even carrots. Then just make your preference of sauce, whether it be red or white. This alternative is just as great tasting and much healthier than meat.

If you are craving lasagna but are cutting the carbohydrates, try using your traditional lasagna recipe but substitute steamed cabbage leaves for the lasagna noodles. The flavor of this casserole is reminiscent of traditional lasagna and may fool your taste buds.

In order to cook lasagna, you will need a deep dish casserole dish that is at least three inches deep. Due to the shape of the noodles, square or rectangular pans work best.

A great thing to do if you do not have a deep dish casserole dish, is to find a deep dish disposable aluminum pan. You can get them at most grocery stores and there great for if you want to freeze a few lasagnas for a few weeks in advance. Well, let's be honest it's also easier to clean up.

Italian cheeses are known worldwide as some of the best you can get. In America we love our pizza and our sandwiches, but they wouldn't be the same without the Italians and their cheeses. In fact, although most of us are quite familiar with three or four of the most common types of cheese they make, the fact is, there are about 400 varieties of cheeses they make.

From Tuscany to Sicily, the Italians roll out the parmigiano, the provolone, and the Mozzarella. And these are just a drop in the bucket compared to the overall outlay of Italian cheeses. They make their cheeses with goat, sheep, cow, or buffalo milk. Their cheeses are great for shredding and have a fragrance and texture all their own.

The quality of their cheese is taken very seriously by the Italians. One thing to watch for when you shop for cheese, is their quality assurance stamp on the label. This is known either as the PDO - 'protected designation of origin', or the IGT - 'protected geographic indication. If you see this you know it' a product of good quality. If you shop for wine, you'll find that wines use these same designations.

When learning about tasty Italian cheeses, you're sure to come across the famous 'Bel Paese' cheese. In Italian, this means 'Beautiful Country'. This cheese has become one of the favorites of all time and one of the best known by people all around the world. It was first made near Milan in a place named 'Melzo'. But it's mostly made in Lombardy, with pasteurized cow's milk. It's meant to be used as a table cheese, but works very well in cooking.

Yes, the Italians and their passion for cheese making is known worldwide. They would hike up into the Alpine mountains, where they'd refine their cheese production methods. Then when they came down, the world welcomed them with open arms. Up there in the old days, back on the mountains, they'd use caves for keeping their cheese cool. The concept of refrigeration was still fairly new.

They use the same types of tools today as they did back then. After all, if it works, then don't fix it. They use wooden shelves, salt, oil, water, cutting boards and small hammers. The three main ingredients that anyone needs in order to make a cheese, is salt, rennet, and milk. From here you can make all kinds of cheeses, and using different kinds of milk and processes, will produce different cheeses.

Regardless of what type of cheese they're making, the starting point is the milk. When all is said and done, cheese is coagulated milk. In the case of Ricotta, cream is used along with milk whey. The Italians commonly use four types of milk, which come from the cow, the goat, the sheep, and the buffalo. But some types of cheeses can also be made with other milks, like camel, or yak, or reindeer.

This Holiday Season Give Those Traditional Crockpot Appetizer Recipes A Little Burst Of Flavor

By Susanne Myers

The holiday season is fast approaching and you need to grab your appetizer recipes and start planning. I know you have a few favorite treats that you like to share with your guests. Your mouth may be watering right now just thinking about those tasty snacks!

Even if you are serving a big meal for your holiday celebration, your guests probably still enjoy a few snacks as they sit and visit before dinner. You've probably developed a few nice little appetizers that keep everyone happy as they mingle. But, do you want to keep serving the same dishes year after year? Breaking from your traditional dishes doesn't have to be difficult if you know a few little tricks for making your appetizers a bit more special.

Your crockpot has been your friend right along as you created your classic appetizers, so now it's time to put your crockpot to work once more as you improve on your favorite appetizer recipes. Those meatballs, that cheese dip, and those little cocktail wienies are about to get bumped up a notch or two!

Cheese Dip: Your classic cheese dip is tasty enough, but wouldn't it be even better with a few special ingredients. Mix up a Cheese & Artichoke dip to surprise and delight your guests. Now, your cheese dip will be remembered!

Add a little zest to this dip by using freshly grated Parmesan cheese. For even more of a tangy flavor use some Dijon mustard and a little Worcestershire sauce if you like. And for some "heat" sprinkle in red pepper flakes or even some Louisiana Hot Sauce. Put everything in the crockpot on low for about 2 hours or until all hot and bubbly. Put out a bowl of crackers, bread, or hearty chips to complete this appetizer tray.

Cocktail Sausages: Think way beyond those little wienies and serve up an easy, but fancy, batch of sweet and tangy Apple Sausage Appetizers instead. Use any combination of ingredients such as brown sugar, honey, balsamic vinegar, and Dijon mustard, then instead of adding Vienna Sausages, cut up some good apple smoked sausage, some tart apples like Granny Smith, and some sweet onion and add that to the crockpot.

If your guests were expecting the standard cocktail wienie appetizer, they'll be pleasantly surprised when they bite into this sweet and spicy treat. Combine the ingredients in your crockpot, set it on low heat, and let cook for about 2 hours. Check to make sure the apples and onions are just cooked through but not turning to mush, then serve warm.

Meatball Bites: Those little meatballs swimming around in barbecue sauce are tasty, but are they special enough for your holiday event? Go ahead and make your mini meatballs out of your favorite recipe, but when it comes to the sauce, it's time to do something special. Beer is the ingredient that kicks this appetizer recipe up a couple pegs. This Tangy Meatball Appetizer will have your guests wondering what makes the sauce so yummy. Start by making your favorite meatball recipe, form the mini meatballs, then brown them in a heavy skillet with cooking oil. Once they're brown, put them in your crock pot.

Pour a can of beer into a bowl and add whatever ingredients you want to make your sauce. I like adding Worcestershire sauce, spicy tomato juice, yellow mustard, horseradish, garlic, Louisiana Hot Sauce, onion, salt, and freshly ground black pepper. Pour this sauce over the meatballs in the crockpot and cook on low for 2 to 3 hours, or until the meatballs are cooked completely. This is one spicy and tangy meatball you won't find just anywhere on any buffet.

Pecan Snacks: A few pretty bowls of nuts scattered on tables throughout the house during your holiday gathering is always a nice touch. Instead of just pouring mixed nuts right out of the jar, how about your own special nutty treat? Pecans are often thought of as a dessert nut, so surprise your guests with pecans presented in grand Cajun fashion!

Start by mixing up a batch of dried or ground seasonings that you would typically find in a Cajun meal; spices like cayenne pepper, chili powder, oregano, thyme, garlic powder, and onion powder. Put melted butter, pecans, and the seasonings in your crockpot, cook covered on high for about 10 to 12 minutes, then uncover the crockpot, turn it down to low, and cook uncovered for about 2 hours, stirring occasionally. When done cooking, dump the spicy pecans out on a rack to let cool.

Don't limit yourself to the same old appetizers you've made for years. Serve your guests new, tastier versions of the appetizers you know and love by adding just a few simple, yet surprising ingredients!

Don't get a Hamilton Beach Programmable Slow Cooker Until You Read This!

By Lynne Ivatt

Life can be a bit of a struggle sometimes can't it? Most of us do find it a test to some extent! Sorting out feeding the family is a constant daily battle, that was always occupying my daily thoughts! I dreaded having to start to cook after a hard days work!

Out of the blue the answer came to my daily battle. I received a Hamilton Beach programmable slow cooker from a family member at Christmas last year. Little did I know how much time I was going to be saving every day!

The first time I used the slow cooker was still in the holidays, but that is when the light bulb went on and it dawned on me just how I could use the slow cooker to feed the family on working days.

Coming home to a lovely tasting meal that is ready for everyone to eat is just great. I program it to get cooking pop the ingredients in and the slow cooker does the rest!

I was surprised at the versatility of slow cooking. There are so many recipes that I can throw together very quickly so we never get bored. Many people just use their slow cooker for things like stews, when cooking roast meats is just as successful.

Why not try this programmable slow cooking method I find that oven cooking dries meat where this method leaves it moist and tender, just falling apart as you cut into it.

There are many different sizes of the Hamilton Beach programmable slow cookers, starting at small sizes like 3 quarts all the way to 4,5,6,7 and 8 quart sizes. If you want to roast meat like I talked about above I would definitely suggest that you get a larger size from the outset.

You won't regret getting a Hamilton Beach programmable slow cooker. I have found mine to be pure quality that dishes up perfect food every time. I promise you will not be disappointed with yours.

Italian Cheeses Are Some Of The Best

They make so many different cheeses by mixing up the types of milk they use, and the processing methods. They utilize sheep milk, and goat milk, cow's milk, and buffalo. Their cheeses are known for their fragrance and great texture. They can be used for cooking or shredding alike.

The Italians take a lot of pride in their cheese quality. And if you go shopping for a quality Italian cheese, just look for the classifications on the label. These are the 'PDO', which means Protected Designation of Origin. And the other is IGT, which means the Protected Geographic Indication. This is known as their stamp of approval as far as quality assurance. Wine uses the same indicators.

The Italians are definitely passionate about their cheese. They have made it up in the Alpine mountains, where they perfected their methods. It was an isolated affair, but what they brought off the mountain was literally gold made from milk. Caves were used to keep things cold since the idea of refrigeration back then was just a new concept.

Some of their other techniques are still used today. The tools have remained the same as it has always been. Salt, water, oil, tiny hammers, cutting boards, and wooden shelves are still used in their production methods. Their three basic ingredients for beginning and making a cheese, are salt, rennet, and some kind of milk. They would exchange the types of milk to produce a different cheese.

Italian cheeses are known worldwide, yet many Americans go about their lives enjoying the fruits of Italian labor, without ever learning about the processes or history behind them. It's a very interesting subject for study. If you'd like to learn more about it, you're only a few mouse-clicks away.
